Neuschwanstein Castle Day Trip

5 out of 5 stars (15 reviews)

Two hours from Munich, the enchanting old-world town of Fuessen lies in the foot hills of the Alps, framed by one of the most breathtaking natural settings in the world. Towering far above the village, seemingly sculpted out of the very mountains that rise magnificently to the heavens, is a sight made from the stuff of dreams: the fabulous and ethereal Neuschwanstein Castle.

This glorious folly was built in the 19th century by the famed "mad" King Ludwig II, a man intoxicated by mythology and who himself became a legend. The shimmering white towers of the castle among the clouds are instantly recognisable to many who haven't ever heard the name Neuschwanstein. It is the inspiration for Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle, and is famous the world over as the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Castle.

To visit it is to step inside a fairy tale.

The guide will bring you on the train journey from Munich and back again and accompany you uphill to the castle's lofty perch, where it sits gleaming above a spectacular panorama of mountains, lakes and valleys. It's not just about the castle - it's also about its wonderful location. The guide will take you to the best vantage points: the lake (if time and weather permits we can try the water for a swim), the postcard-perfect view of the equally beautiful Hohenschwangau Castle, the waterfall gorge, the stunning views from the Marienbruecke bridge suspended high over it all.

While you are marvelling at the beauty all around, the guide will tell you the engaging story of King Ludwig's renowned and tragic reign, of his turbulent times, and of the obsession that drove him to build his fantasy castle in the mountains and ultimately destroyed him.

The guide will also ensure that you don't have to wait in line for the separate internal tour of the king's private chambers by a specialist castle guide.

This tour is the most practical way to enter the fantasy-world.

" Very beautiful castle, happy with the arrangements "

It is 1.5 hours away from Munich City by bus, although there were traffic conditions, we were able to have sufficient time to tour the castle and the surrounding lakes and took magnificent pictures. There is 1 mile incline climb up to the castle from the village below where the bus stops, or could take a 2.50EU one way up or 3.00EU return bus trip on the hill which leave you 500m to walk (small slopes). There are handrails along the route so it helped a lot for less fit people like me.
" Fantastic trip to the fairy take cadtle "

A wonderful trip through the beautiful Bavarian countryside to see the fairy tale castle which did not disappoint. The day was made even better with Charlie as our guide. He was very informative and his story telling was fun. He gave us the back ground to the castle and the life of Ludwig in a fun way. Thanks Charlie for a great day out!

Joa made the adventure come to life! Excellent tour!!!
" Beautiful Day and Visit "
4 out of 5 stars
We had a great trip to the castle, and will let Munich City Tour take credit for the beautiful weather too! The day was well-planned and organized and the guides were knowledgable and personable. The entire trip could have been an hour shorter - the town is entirely built for tourists so there's not much to do once you've seen the castle and taken all the side walks and had some food or drink.

Jax - the tour guide - was really informative about the history of the castle, told the very interesting story of King Ludwig and was very clear with his instructions. On the train home he also gave us a lot more information about eating out and other attractions in Munich.
" Winter fantasy "
5 out of 5 stars
It was snowing in the mountains when our wonderful animated British guide met us at the Munich train station to begin our journey to ludwig's castle. He made this adventure easy and comfortable by providing our group info on necessities, amenities and options. Out transfer to the bus was smooth. My daughter and I decided on horse drawn carriage to get up the mountain. Great choice. Our guide was there to answer questions, even horticulture questions I had unrelated to the castle tour! He related the history of the castle in a captivating way, and got us all home safe. It was a wonderful adventure. Worth the price! Thank you!
" A wonderful trip to the Castle "

Had a great time during the tour. It was informative and the views were amazing. Jeff Cox was a very good guide. His smarties treats were nice. :D You can really tell that he knows a lot about the place and the history and told us interesting stories about Bavaria, King Ludwig II and the castle while we were on the train. We just got there on time. Didnt have to wait in line to get to the castle and the bus. We were just on time going to the Castle and back to Munich.
" Great tour. "

Everything was taken care of by Austin our guide, train and admission tickets. This made it stress free. Austin was a very personable and educationally fun guide. We appreciated his sense of humor. We would highly recommend this tour and Austin.
" Great views, great tour guide, awesome group of people "
5 out of 5 stars
We picked a day that ended up being rainy, but ended up having a great time with our tour guide and the group of people in our tour. The 2 hour train ride back to Munich was a highlight, with everyone telling stories, especially our tour guide Roland. Good memories!
" Amazing visit at Neuschwanstein "
5 out of 5 stars
Booked this tour at 5pm on a Thursday, for Saturday. And I was flying to Munich on Friday in the early morning hours. I called Munich City Tours in Netherlands in order to wire the payment across and they responded immediately, although it was after working hours. Very professional and courteous service. The tour was also well organised and our American tour guide, Austin, was knowledgeable and armed with a great sense of humour. Overall, I highly recommend MCT to anyone visiting Munich
" Great guide, easy transport; castle tour short "
4 out of 5 stars
My guide (his name slips my mind, but he was from Scotland) was fantastic--very knowledgeable, and very funny! Getting out there and back was very easy and comfortable. The castle is stunning of course--you really HAVE to get some pictures from the bridge overlooking the castle. My only complaint is that the inner castle tour felt rather brief; I could have spent much longer looking and learning about everything in there. Also, you aren't allowed to take pictures inside the castle or they'll kick you off the tour--I suppose so they can sell you books/postcards with pictures (still annoying). But it was a really enjoyable tour!
" Wonderful tour of Neuschwanstein Castle "

Terrific time with our Scottish guide Keith traveling to king Ludwig's Neuschwanstein castle. His historical perspective and easygoing approach were just right. His mum Elaine should be very proud.
